How to extract CBD from the plant

Although CBD oils can be produced synthetically, the easiest and safest way to obtain CBD is by extracting it from cannabis plants. To harvest CBD from the plant, many producers use extraction solvents to separate and collect CBD from the seeds and stalks of the cannabis plant. As CBD is impossible to dissolve in water, it is necessary to use gas or alcoholic and oily solvents for the extraction process.
There are many different solvents employed to extract CBD from the plant, and each of them produces different cannabinoid extracts. Moreover, CBD oil producers have to upgrade their production methods and employ the cleanest and safest extraction process available. The two most common extraction methods use CO2 and Ethanol.

Solvent-based Extraction


Often times a solvent is used for cannabis extraction processes using alcohol or another liquid solvent. Normally, the plant is soaked in the alcohol, removed, the liquid gets filtered and the alcohol is evaporated. On the other hand, one of the biggest challenges is the inherent polarity of solvents. Ethanol, for example, has the ability to mix with water and dissolve water-soluble molecules like chlorophyll. At times, CBD producers may remove the chlorophyll from the extract due to the bitter taste it causes in the product.

It may seem that all CBD products with the names of “tincture” or “oil” on the label use ethanol extraction, however, this is not the case. We noticed that most cannabis producers use CO2 extraction, not ethanol. Nevertheless, we would still prefer ethanol or other alcoholic solvent extraction as this is the best method for extracting the main cannabinoids or the entire phytocomplex of the plant, without leaving final residuals.

Gas Extraction

CO2 Supercritical

CO2 extraction nowadays is one of the most common ways of extracting CBD from the cannabis plant. This method uses high pressurised liquid carbon dioxide into a chamber filled with dried hemp plant material. When passing the cannabis material, the fluid easily extracts plant waxes from the cannabis. The CBD drips down to a collection vessel, and the remaining CO2 goes into a condenser and turns into a liquid for later use.

The most common criticism with CO2 extraction is the high upfront costs that come with the scientific equipment needed. However, unlike alcohol or butane, CO2 is a highly versatile solvent. Full-Spectrum CBD Oil

A full-spectrum extract is the extraction of a cannabis plant but maintaining in its composition all the cannabinoids, terpenoids and flavonoids of the plant. Several studies have shown that the effect produced by all cannabis compounds working together with terpenes was much higher, compared to the use of an isolated cannabinoid in its purest form. The stronger effect is justified by the synergy that occurs when the therapeutic potential of a cannabinoid increases by the combination with other cannabinoids and terpenes, all with their own medical properties. This synergy is known as the “Entourage effect”, and cannabis researchers are observing its great importance in medicine even more. Because of the full-plant composition, a full-spectrum oil surely contains some traces of THC in it. However, the amount of THC is always maintained below 0.2%, according to the European limits. Even with that small quantity of THC, there is no way to get high with a CBD Full spectrum Oil. However, there is a possibility that its traces could potentially cause a positive result in a drug test.

Pure CBD Oil

To manufacture isolated CBD, producers use extraction methods that only allows the extraction of specific compounds from the herbal material, such as CO2 extraction. Through additional filtering and processing until nothing more than a white powder remains, the so-called CBD crystals are produced, with over 99 percent of pure CBD. Since this powder is liposoluble (soluble in oil), it can be easily mixed with a carrier liquid, such as MCT coconut oil, olive oil or hemp seed oil. Even if it is very easy to have a final product with the same CBD concentration as a full-spectrum oil, this isolated CBD oil will lack the terpenes and all other cannabinoids of the plant, thus, the entourage effect will never occur. However, the fact that only CBD is extracted from the whole phytocomplex leads to no traces of THC, allowing no problems with drug tests.
