CBD Edible Guide

What you should check to find the best manufactured CBD Edible in the market and how to choose the right one.

What are CBD Edibles?

CBD products can provide different levels of relief, including systemic relief affecting the entire body, or localised relief that affects only the specific area where the product is applied. The type of relief mainly depends on the way CBD products are consumed. CBD comes in several forms of products, for sublingual, topical, inhalation, or oral consumption.

A CBD edible is any beverage or food that contains CBD. CBD capsules, gummies and infused beverages, edibles in general, are consumed orally to provide systemic relief through digestion. CBD edibles may be one of the most popular ways of taking CBD thanks to its ease of use and system relief management. CBD can last longer through the digestive tract due to the liver metabolising the compound before it crosses over the blood-brain barrier. Oral administration of CBD

In order to provide a more general systemic action, common ways of absorbing CBD are sublingually and orally. While sublingual CBD goes directly into the bloodstream, through ingestion, the process can be trickier and longer. Ingestion, while considered to be the easiest administration method, isn’t necessarily the most efficient for absorbing CBD. When you ingest CBD through the stomach, the compound enters the hepatic portal system, where it is carried through the portal vein and then into the liver.

The “first pass effect” takes place in the liver, where CBD is metabolised. In the liver, the CYP450 enzyme acts upon CBD, reducing its concentration before transferring the remaining compound into the bloodstream. This trip through the liver reduces the efficiency of CBD as well as its bioavailability. Studies reported a bioavailability rate between 6% and 20% when CBD was ingested directly. Moreover, due to the several steps that CBD has to take, ingesting CBD edibles can require more time for the effects to kick in. This can take up to 1 or 2 hours in order to reach maximum effect.

Through ingestion, CBD directly goes to the main organs of the digestive system, which is an advantage for gastrointestinal conditions such as Chron’s disease and inflammatory bowel diseases. As a result of this direct distribution of CBD to the affected area, symptoms like vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and weight loss can be quickly relieved.

How many forms of edibles exist and how to choose between them?

CBD Capsules

This may be the most used form of edibles. Capsules are easy to swallow, just like a vitamin or any other pill, or it can be added into foods or drinks. Moreover, every capsule comes with a very specific amount of CBD in it, allowing precise dosage with no measurements or special instruments required.

CBD Gummies

Probably the tastiest CBD product on the market. Gummies with CBD have the same ingredients as classic gummies and candies with gelatine, sugar and a bit of extra flavour. In addition to the classic ingredients, CBD companies are adding fixed amounts of CBD extract to their gummies. Therefore, CBD gummies are an easy and tasty way to ensure consumers get the recommended dosage of CBD for their conditions.

CBD Infused Teas

This is maybe the most natural way of taking CBD. Not only are CBD-infused drinks delicious, offering the natural taste of cannabis, they are also a fantastic way to enjoy edibles, and the intake can be faster. In fact, as the CBD is in liquid form, a small part of it can be sublingually administered as the drink is being consumed, but also passing through the digestive tract. On the other hand, CBD-infused beverages can be a bit trickier to dose. Because of the possibility to dissolve cannabinoids in fatty foods or liquids, it can be especially hard to totally dissolve cannabinoids in water compared to biscuits which are rich in fats. For this reason, in order to release cannabinoids as much as possible, it’s necessary to add some fat to the water, such as milk. With one or two spoons of milk, cannabinoids can be released by the vegetable mass and mix with the solution.
