Can CBD be used by athletes?

CBD has a shown to be broadly effective. With its therapeutic potential CBD can also be used in an athletic environment. Several reports of athletes decribed better performance and increased focus in connection with CBD. Due to CBD’s stress reducing properties, its intake can lead to higher concentration. This can have a positive effect on an athletes sportive execution and endurance and can therefore reduce the risk of injury.

Effect of CBD on sportive activity

The continuous physical strain of being an athlete often includes muscle pain and hardening of muscles. This can have further effects on other body parts and lead to, for example, headaches. A receptor called TRPV-1 is, amongst other things, responsible for the sensation of pain and the regulation of inflammations. CBD connects to this receptor and can therefore reduce the aching and tension of muscles. The use of CBD can also benefit blood circulation and the cardiovascular system.

Potential for long-term use

CBD does not only benefit the above mentioned processes but it also helps the body to regenerate faster, thanks to CBD’s calming and relaxing effects. A better blood circulation supports the body with a faster oxygen supply, which leads to a faster regeneration. Physical stress can be reduced as well with CBD. Many athletes regularly take painkillers, such as Vicodin or Percocet. The continuous consumption of those kind of painkillers often include unwanted side effects, opposed to the use of CBD. Furthermore, there is no risk of addiction when taking CBD unlike with traditional pain relief.

CBD and sports

Another great advantage of CBD in connection with sports is the aforementioned regeneration of the body. The relaxing effect acts as a muscle relaxant and leads to shorter recovery time between training sessions. The stimulation of blood circulation leads to a better supply of of oxygen, which means that muscles can regenerate faster and be utilized more. Nausea after an intense training session can also be treated with Cannabidiol. An important factor to be aware of, is that CBD does not have any psychoactive effects unlike THC. Therefore, no “high”-feeling is being induced by the use of CBD. Famous examples, such as NFL-player Jake Plummer, represent the opinion that CBD should be legal for athletes. According to studies conducted by the university of St. Louis, more than half of all NFL-players had to take strong painkillers and opiates during their career. This could be avoided with the use of CBD.

How can CBD be used in sports?

CBD is available in different forms and intensities. The easiest way of administration is probably CBD-oil, which is legally available as a food supplement. The use of CBD against symptoms, caused by physical stress can play an important role in sports. There is, however, still a lot of research needed as well as an explicit and official acceptance in different sports.
