Recreational Cannabis’ reputation amongst most society includes that it induces a drowsy feeling (thanks to the psychoactive component THC). A lot of research is being done concerning CBD and its effects on sleep. The outcomes so far were, that the reaction depends mainly on the dose taken.
How does CBD work?
CBD works through the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in our body, which produces its own cannabinoids. The ECS regulates processes within our body, such as our mood and appetite as well as our perception of pain. CBD interacts with the ECS and its receptors and results of research suggest that cannabis oil has an important effect on the sleep cycle.
How does CBD affect sleep?
Sleeping problems can come from different sources such as anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain or stress. We are looking at different factors and how the dosage might vary, depending on the reason of your sleeping issues.
In general lower doses of CBD can be energizing but can also reduce anxiety. If you believe that your sleeping problems are caused by anxiety or stress, finding the right dose of CBD to reduce these feelings can benefit your sleep.
CBD in lower doses increases attentiveness and reduces daytime sleepiness, which is an important factor to strengthen the sleep-wake-cycle.
If you have issues sleeping because you suffer from chronic pain, CBD can have a double effects: Firstly, it can alleviate some pain, which again can improve sleep and it can directly help with your sleeping pattern.
Studies have shown that higher doses of CBD have sedative effects. High doses of CBD may also help insomnia. Participants of a study had improved sleeping patterns and reported to have significantly less sleep disruptions. At high doses, however, participants reported to have fewer dreams.
CBD dosage for better sleep
As you might know already, there is no “right” dosage – it differs from person to person. The dosage that is right for you depends on how your body processes cannabinoids, on your body weight and other aspects, such as illnesses. And, of course, it depends in which form you are taking CBD.
We recommend using CBD oil because it can be easily administered. But how to use CBD oil? First you should always consult your doctor or a doctor specialised in cannabinoid treatment. Then you will have to decide on the CBD oil and the cannabidiol content. When you start using the cannabis oil, you should start with a lower dosage and monitor your reaction and sleep pattern. You can then adjust the dosage until you have reached the desired effects
CBD benefits and possible side effects
CBD generally does not evoke any side effects in healthy adults. The known side effects are a dry mouth, low blood pressure, slower movements, lightheadedness and sleepiness (which is what we want, when having issues falling asleep).
It is also possible that CBD interacts with medication, such as sedative medications and those that the liver alters or breaks down. Caution also has to be given during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This is why you should always consult a doctor, before using CBD.
